I'm looking to purchase an 1895SS with an uncheckered stock, which is what I am after. But the Ser # starts 090 with a JM stamp. Avoid it and move on? I DO NOT WANT A REMLIN! Matter of fact, I'm so steamed with what Remington has done to Marlin that my daughter will be getting a Savage in.270 for her hunting rifle instead of a Rem 770 now. She wants camo and stainless.
1895SS (sporter safety) is a North Haven gun.Marlin hasn't made smooth stocks, except for CB's in decades. S/N, if correct, sounds like a 1991 gun.. You subtract the first two numbers from 100. So for example if the SN starts with 93, 93-100=7 so it would be a 2007 gun. That holds true with the exception of 91.
While that would normally indicate a 2009 production rifle, to my knowledge no one has seen a 90 series gun for 2010 leading many of us to believe that Remington just kept using the old numbers. They now carry Remington style SN's and I know nothing about that. The older Marlins used letter designators. My XL7's serial number is XL706XXX.
Does this mean it was made in 1994? Not very possible. How are X7s numbered? If anyone knows, please tell me. Local gunshop tells me that the new Savages are the best buy for the $$s and have earned a good reputation for accuracy with that new accu trigger. The owner of the shop (older fellow) says that Savage is one of the few gun makers left that make their own barrels. CJLocal gunshop hasn't heard of the X7 series?
BTW, new Savages--I think he means the Savage Axis, as he's getting over the 770--do not have the AccuTrigger. From the examples I've handled, the Edge/Axis has got to be the cheapest quality gun I've ever seen--and that includes the 770.
The best buy for your money would be 1) Marlin X7 if you're planning on spending about $300; 2) Howa 1500 if you're planning on spending $400; and 3) Tikka T3 if you're planning on spending $500. Savages are a seriously obselete design (assuming you mean the 110 series), are overpriced for the features they offer (well, so are Tikkas), and are just plain ugly--I mean every Savage in productino today. For reasons unknown to us at SCC, it seems that SCC members who are AT&T users experience issues with emails and personal messages when using our forum. This is not unique to SCC and several other internet sites are reporting the same issues. Todo10, the company who helps us with the forum and hosting, have file a complaint with AT&T but we are not convinced AT&T will do anything about it. The only way around this is to register and use another email address not connected to AT&T. We are sorry for any inconveniences this might cause!
Please check this link for more info: More info will come when we know more! With kind regards Jim aka L61R. Hello snowz, Could you post a couple pictures? I've heard of an M595 that could be a vintage rifle that Mannerheim's White Army drove the Russian Red Army from Finland in 1918, after Finland Independence in 1917. Or it could be an early model of the modern Tikka which is I believe is barreled by Sako but mostly Beretta. If it looks similar to a Mosin Nagant, you may have something interesting there. In the Winter and Continuation Wars 1939 into the 40's there was a factory in Tikkakoski in Finland (Woodpecker Rapids - trans) that re-worked captured Russian Mosin Nagants.
During the break between the Winter and Continuation War the Finns were able to refurb the rifle (about 96,000 of them) which helped attribute to their victory over the Russians the end of WWII. Sorry for the 'best I could do rant' but a picture would help. I could be way off base here about your particular rifle - and history, too. Hello snowz, Could you post a couple pictures?

That last post would have scared me! Did you buy it new?
If you are a second or so owner, do you know what year it was purchased. Enable Rdp Vista Home Sp2. I can't find any table for serial numbers in SAKO data.
You may try giving Beretta a call in MD. I've called them on other rifles and been able to get a guesstimate on manufacturing years. Sorry if I scared you. I have a couple M39 WWII era Mosin Nagants 7.62x54r that were worked over by the Tika/Valmet factory and have Finn Stampings. Guess I need a cup of coffee:shocked3: S-A.
