How To Install Hei Distributor Ford 302
Jul 11, 2009 Hello I want to upgrade my distributor to a electronic ignition system. I currently have a old type point type distributor. Can anybody tell me how to.
Hi All, If anyone could help me understand this more I would really appreciate it. I bought a new distributor for my '66 but the mechanic working on the car said it won't work and I need a points distributor. I was told all I would need is a 12v wire to install this, but I have no idea and don't even know where to get that. I want to know if I even got the right distributor (and if by some chance I did what I need to install it) because this one uses an electronic advance and my mechanic said I don't have the wire that would plug into the distributor.
Really obvious I don't know much about this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I just installed a Speedway GM style HEI in my 66 coupe. Got it used for $40. I'm using a 10' Edelbrock air filter assembly. The only source for 12V for the ignition is right off the ignition switch. Cannot Access Serial Port Mts on this page.
Since you're going to put in a high performance ignition that makes a hotter spark, you need a very good source of power. Can't make a better spark with junk going in, right. I don't think the stock wiring is up to it so I ran a #10 to a relay that's triggered off the ignition switch. The relay feeds a 6 circuit aux fuse block. I ran a #12 to the new distributer and a #14 to the electric choke. Both work great now. Before the choke worked like crap and actually had it held open.

Do not attempt this without a tech manual backing you up, most Libraries have Chilton's Manuals ( big thick hardcover ones, not the 'mustang only ' things ) that you can photocopy the distributor placement and firing order pages. Find #1 cylinder, mark that spot on the dist. Body and the intake manifold, take off the dist.
Cap and crank the motor until it points at the mark you made, loosen the dist. Clamp and pull it up, notice where the rotor ends up, that will be your start point for the replacement dist.. Slide the HEI in and you should be lined up, put the wires on the correct plugs ( the old ones are incompatible with the HEI.) and start and time the motor. If that did not make sense, DO NOT attempt, it is easy to screw up, have a shop do it or get a mechanically inclined friend to help. What you do is put number 1 piston all the way up then take your hands and turn it to top dead center on the crank.
You can tell top dead center because it will show a 0 on the scale. Now turn the rotor button to number 1 plug wire on the cap and drop it in the engine.
If it won,t drop in then take a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump. Did you forgot to hook up the wire coming from the distributor? That wire goes to the coil. If the distributor was put in right it should of least back fired. You either don,t have juice going to the plugs or your 180 degrees off. • Tell us some more • Upload in Progress • Upload failed.
